Structure of undergraduate degrees in the English Department

BA English Language & Literature/BA English with Film

These are honours degree programmes leading to a BA in English Language & Literature/BA English with Film from King’s College London. The degrees are organised on a module system: each module is 15 credits. All modules have a broadly comparable workload. The teaching year consists of two semesters and you will take 4 modules in each semester.

BA English Language & Literature

  • Year 1, Level 4: 8 modules (120 credits). Each module consists of a one-hour weekly lecture, and a one-hour weekly seminar. Seven of these modules are compulsory, but in the second semester you will study one module from another department. The aim of these modules is to provide a stimulating transition to upper level work. Please refer to the Module Descriptions for more details.
  • Year 2, level 5: 8 modules (120 credits). In order to promote a balanced structure of study, the English Department organises all our second year modules into a banding system. Modules are taught either by a one-hour weekly lecture and a one-hour weekly seminar, or by a two-hour weekly seminar. Please refer to the Module Descriptions for more details.
  • Year 3, level 6: 8 modules (120 credits). You may choose from any of the English Department modules available. Modules are taught either by a one-hour weekly lecture and a one-hour weekly seminar, or by a two-hour weekly seminar. Please refer to the Module Descriptions for more details.

BA English with Film

English with Film students follow the same pattern as study as BA English Language & Literature students, but you will take 2 modules in Film Studies each year (30 credits), one in each semester.

BA American Studies

Final year, level 6: 8 modules (120 credits) or 7 modules including the 30 credit dissertation (120 credits).  Modules are taught either by a one-hour weekly lecture and a one-hour weekly seminar, or by a two-hour weekly seminar.

Taking modules outside the English Department

  • BA English students take a 15 credit module from other department in your 1st year and may take up to 30 credits from other departments during your 2nd and final years of the degree.
  •  BA English with Film students may take up to 30 credits from another department during your 2nd and final years of the degree. Modules offered by American Studies Department do NOT count as one of these modules.

Weighting of the Degrees

Module marks will be weighted as follows:
  • Marks of the best 90 credits at level 6 (final year) will be given a weighting of 5. A minimum of 90 credits at this level will be required for the award of a degree
  • Marks of any remaining level 6 (final year) and all level 5 modules (2nd year) will be given a weighting of 3.
  • Marks of level 4 credits (1st year) will be given a weighting of 1. A maximum of 120 credits is permitted at this level.

Condoned fails

Marks in the range of 33-39% are permitted, but only once you have exhausted your re-assessment opportunities. Up to 45 credits of condoned fails are permitted.

Re-sitting modules

The pass mark for all modules is 40%. If you fail a module you are allowed to re-sit it twice, at the earliest opportunity, but your mark will be capped at 40%.

Progression

To proceed to the following year, the minimum progression
requirements are as follows;
  • Year 1 to 2; 90 credits (excluding condoned fails)
  • Year 2 to 3; 210 credits (excluding condoned fails)
  • to graduate; 360 credits (Including 45 credits of condoned fails)

Combined Studies with English

You will take 2 modules each year in the English Department, one in each semester. The banding system described above does not apply to Combined Studies with English students.

JYA, Penn students

JYA and Penn students take modules as arranged with the Study Abroad Office, or Department Administrator. JYA and Penn students may post work to English Department, King’s College London, Strand, London WC2R 2LS, if you return to the US before deadline dates, but you must keep proof of postage. If you take a module with a written examination element, and you are at King’s for semester 1 only, you will be given alternative coursework
