7AAMM056 Advanced Studies in Music Analysis and Criticism
Beethoven's Late Works
Tutor: Michael Fend
Teaching: one two-hour seminar per week
Value: 20 credits
Assessment: one essay of 4,000 words
This module is a ‘cross-over module’; it involves both an analytical and historical examination of the late works, focussing on the late piano sonatas and the last five string quartets of Beethoven. The main issues are: What do these works mean and how are these meanings constructed? The module will investigate various ways of analysing the music and the ramifications of these methods. It will also look at the historical contexts that might apply to these works such as early romantic thought, the impact of the French Revolution and its aftermath, the secularisation of religion, and the idea of absolute music. Some of the module will be devoted to Theodor W. Adorno’s interpretation of Beethoven’s music and the criticism it has received in recent years.
