Alumni

We welcome continuing relations with our alumni after they have graduated.  Here you can find news and information about events; about contacting us; and about publications by our alumni.

News

It is with great regret that we record the death of Robert Seth-Smith, on May 6th of this year. Robert was a figure of stature, both literally and figuratively; sharply intelligent and a tremendous enthusiast, he was an excellent philosopher, who achieved an exemplary first in 1994, and a vivid and charming man who bounced his way through the department.  Sadly he long struggled with addiction; and even his talent and charm was not proof against its dangerous power.  We offer our deep sympathy to his parents, Richard and Nina, and to his sister Anna.

Events

The first Aumni Lecture was given by Professor Rai Gaita on 23 January 2009, in the Great Hall, Strand Campus:

    Morality and Political Sobriety

The text of the lecture will be available here.

Mark Sainsbury Fund

The first Mark Sainsbury Lecture was given by Professor Simon Blackburn on 13 May 2009:

    Limp Truth and Gripping Fiction

Mark Sainsbury himself was here for the occasion, and gave a short address reminding the college of the origins and significance of the Susan Stebbing Chair of which Mark was, until last year, the holder.
Mark was a member of the Department from 1984, having been at Bedford College before the merger; from 1989 he was the Susan Stebbing Professor at King’s. But in 2002 he moved full-time to Texas University.  He is now Emeritus Professor in the Department, and we are delighted that he still comes back to visit us from time to time. In honour of Mark’s extraordinary contribution to the Department we have instituted these Mark Sainsbury lectures. We were delighted that there was a large and enthusiastic audience, of current students, old students and staff from London and further afield, and a tremendous party afterwards.

The event also marked the launch of the Mark Sainsbury Fund, to ensure the future of these lectures and in order to support the department’s research students with bursaries.  Contributions -- from the very small to the very large -- will be extremely gratefully received:  please contact the Development office.

Do please consider supporting philosophy!   We would be tremendously grateful for the resources to put on more lectures of this kind, as well as the opportunity to support our graduate students, as the real funding available for research in philosophy is decreasing year by year.

Do let us have your suggestions for other future events.

Publications

We would like to show a list of publications – both outside and inside philosophy -- written by our alumni.  If you would like your publications included in this list, please send us the details.

Contact

We are keen to extend our contact list of alumni, especially by email. Please would you make sure that we have your email address, so that we can send you information about future events?

Please would you tell anyone you know who was a member of the Department that we would like to hear from them?

We have a Facebook Group – Philosopher Kings Alumni:  please do join!
