One-day Workshop - June 2007

Between two opposing state-nationalisms: The Greek Orthodox minority in Turkey and the Muslim minority in Greece, 1830s to the eve of World War II

The Centre for Hellenic Studies, in collaboration with the Department of Byzantine & Modern Greek Studies and the Greek-Turkish Encounters Series (King’s College London and the School of Oriental and African Studies),
Saturday, 2 June 2007
The Council Room, Strand Campus, King’s College London
In line with the organizers’ consistent efforts to promote the advancement of research in several aspects of Hellenic culture and history, including Greco-Turkish relations, the workshop will be geared towards research students, academics, and individuals with an interest in Greco-Turkish relations and minority issues. It aims to provide participants with a critical understanding of the processes that led to the formation of a Greek Orthodox minority in Turkey and a Muslim minority in Greece by 1923, and of aspects of their development until the eve of World War II.
Seeking to combine established views on the topic with more recent ones, speakers include historians with a number of publications on the subject, younger academics who have recently completed their PhD and are starting their academic career, and graduate students whose research is based on the two respective minorities. For more information, please see the programme (attached below).
If you wish to attend, please fill in the registration form (attached below). Please note that participation is free, but there will be a restricted number of seats.
