Welcome!

Jan Palmowski - Head of A&H I hope that you had a wonderful summer, and that you feel ready to start the academic year. I would like to extend a particular welcome to all new students joining us in September, and to the growing number of students who are returning from their semester or year abroad.
In response to student feedback we are putting much more content on the web. This is the second year that the handbook is fully electronic. We are also rolling out e-learning, to facilitate access to learning and teaching materials, to improve communications, and to provide for easier submission of essays. This had already been introduced in a few departments, but we will be making this available to all students over the coming years. If you have any suggestions about how we can improve communications further, then do let us know.
According to the 2011 QS-World Rankings, the School is number 35 of all Arts and Humanities faculties in the world; so you can be assured that you are studying in a faculty with an outstanding international reputation. We are delighted that the quality of our work is being recognized the world over, and we very much hope that you will also feel that you are part of this success.
Those of you who were here last year will remember that we started a number of important discussions about learning and teaching in the School – how existing excellence can be preserved, and how we can do things better. I hope we can continue these conversations in the coming year, and to this extent I do hope you will communicate with your department student reps so that your voice is heard throughout the year.

I hope you will have a productive, enriching and successful year!
