Anastasia Chamberlen

Profile

Currently I am a first year M/PhD student at the School of Law, King’s College London. I completed my undergraduate studies in History and Sociology at Warwick University and I obtained my M.Phil degree in Criminology from Cambridge University.

Research

My research interests are interdisciplinary and lie mostly within the Social Sciences. I am interested in theoretical ideas in crime causation and in analyses within the sociology of punishment and particularly within prison studies and sentencing. Further, I am very interested in aspects of gender and crime and particularly in feminist criminology. I also take an interest in social theory and mostly in theoretical thought within the Sociology of Law, the Sociology of Health and Illness and the Sociology of the Body.

My PhD research looks at women’s imprisonment and the representations and social uses of the female body in open and closed prisons in England. I aim to empirically research aspects of Health in women’s prisons and I am comparing the effects of open and closed prison regimes on women’s presentation and view of themselves. This study wants to illustrate the effects of the prison on women by integrating both mental and physical expressions of the pains of imprisonment.

Teaching and Employment Interests

I would be really interested in gaining teaching and/or research experience in Criminology and Sociology. I would be mainly interested in teaching on prisons studies, gender and crime, sentencing or in themes within the sociology of the body.
