Bar Society Internal Tournaments

The Bar Society organises all of King’s Internal Mooting competitions as well as mooting events and workshops for all abilities from complete beginner to seasoned mooter. In 2010/11:

Demonstration moot

Held on the evening of Monday 18th October and judged by Professor John Phillips, students will be able to watch four experienced mooters go head to head in a contract law moot followed by a drinks reception where spectators can mingle and ask questions of the competitors and judge.

Trial moot

This gives students an opportunity to familiarise themselves with mooting procedures and formalities and test their mooting skills in a friendly, non-competitive forum before taking part in the internal mooting competitions.

Bar Society Mini Moot Cup

Kicking off in the first week of November, the Mini Moot is specifically tailored for new prospective mooters. A rapid tournament culminating in a final before a panel of three judges and a trophy to be won! The aim is to provide beginners with an opportunity to experience a formal mooting competition with those of a similar level.

Mooting workshops

Throughout the year the Bar Society will be hosting a series of Mooting Workshops organised both externally (in conjunction with BPP Law School and the Government Legal Service) and internally. The training will ensure that your academic legal skills are put into practice. Barristers from the Inns of Court will be invited to provide students with a taste of the mooting procedure and custom.

Novice speed moot

Speed mooting offers the opportunity to moot without the lengthy preparation. Mooters will be provided with relevant authorities and there will be a mixture of moots and workshops throughout the day. It is a fun, interactive event during which barristers work through a moot problem with small groups, providing guidance and encouragement.

Subject specific moots

We will be running a number of subject specific moots, in areas such as family law, jurisprudence and human rights law. This is a fantastic opportunity if you have a favourite subject or a desire to practice in a specific area. The preliminary rounds will take place internally and the final will be in conjunction with other students from UCL, Queen Mary and LSE.

Graveson Moot Cup

The mooting calendar is culminates with the most prestigious mooting competition of the academic year. Competition is fierce, the location is stupefying, and the judges are demanding, but lifting the silver trophy in the Royal Courts of Justice in front of Sir Justice Robin Auld makes all the preparation worthwhile.
