The European Law Moot Court (ELMC) Competition
King’s College London is assembling a team for the European Law Moot Court Competition (ELMC). The ELMC is one of Europe’s most famous and most prestigious moot court competitions and is directly supported by the European Court of Justice. Each year, students from almost 100 law schools worldwide participate.
We are currently looking for four enthusiastic individuals who want to give their EU law studies an extra dimension and bring King’s College in the top ranks of this competition.
The ELMC is a simulated hearing before the European Court of Justice. It concerns a preliminary ruling procedure where the ECJ is asked several questions from a national court to interpret European Union law. Competitor teams make observations on behalf of the different parties before the national court, the European Commission and the Advocate-General and try to convince the ECJ of their interpretation of EU law.
The case was released on 1 September (see the ELMC website for this year’s problem) and written memorials are due on 30 November 2010. On the basis of these memorials, a preselection of 48 will be announced in January 2011. Regional finals will take place in February and March 2011, normally at three European universities and one university overseas.
The top 8 teams of those rounds will be selected to participate to the All-European Final at the Court of Justice in Luxembourg and present their arguments in front of the real judges and advocates-general at the Court. For a glimpse of last year’s All-European Final in Luxembourg click here.
For further details on how to apply (etc) please see the attached document below. NB: the deadline to apply is Sunday, 3 October 2010 at 12 noon.
