The College is offering 50 PhD studentships in the Health Schools, following its success in attracting externally funded awards combined with a major investment of College funds. Awards are mainly available for four years, and include an annual stipend and tuition fees.

One of the country’s leading midwives, Professor Cathy Warwick CBE, has been appointed as the next General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives. She will succeed Dame Karlene Davis who retires in October this year.

08 Oct 2008 Gold Standard Review Recommends Midwife-led Care for Women
A systematic review of research led by Jane Sandall, Professor of Midwifery and Women's Health at the School, has concluded that all women should be offered midwife-led models of care, and women should be encouraged to ask for this option.

01 Jun 2008 Midwifery: A Worldwide Commitment to Women and the Newborn
Jane Sandall and Holly Kennedy as co-chairs of the ICM Research Standing Committee were appointed to the Scientific Programme Planning Committee for the 2008 ICM Congress in Glasgow and worked for 3 years to processing and then selecting the scientific abstracts for the programme.

12 May 2008 4th International Conference of the Royal Medical Services
Professor Alison While was the invited guest nurse at the 4th International Conference of the Royal Medical Services of Jordan held 12-15 May in Amman where she ran a workshop for nurses working in the Royal Medical Services and gave a paper later in the week.

The first ever Prostate Cancer Master class was today launched at King’s. Ann Keen, Under Secretary of State for Health Services, addressed delegates at the event organised by the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing & Midwifery in partnership with The Prostate Cancer Charity.

The King's Patient Safety & Service Quality Research Centre, was opened at a ceremony last week, attended by Professor John Moxham, Medical Director of King’s College Hospital, Acting CEO of King's College Hospital, Dame Jacqueline Docherty, and the Vice–Principal of King's, Professor Sir Lawrence Freedman.
 
02 Apr 2008  Health minister presents UNICEF UK award
Minister for Public Health, Dawn Primarolo MP, presented UNICEF UK's first Baby Friendly award to the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing & Midwifery, recognising the high standards of training and education on breastfeeding provided by their midwifery courses.
 
02 Apr 2008 Midwifery training becomes ‘Baby Friendly’ accredited
We are delighted to announce that The Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery at King’s College London has become the first university in England to gain the prestigious ‘Baby Friendly’ accreditation award. Mention was made of the School's achievement in the The Times Higher 10 April 2008.

EWMA (European Wound Management Association) is an organisation that exists to promote education and research in wound care. One of its functions is to identify high quality wound healing modules and programmes across Europe. This is achieved via an endorsement process of modules and short courses that demonstrates excellence through peer review.

Professor Jane Sandall in the School of Nursing and Midwifery was invited to provide a keynote paper on Maternal Health Systems and advocacy for change to an international meeting of the Choices and Challenges in Changing Childbirth Regional Research Network hosted in the Faculty of Health Sciences, American University of Beirut in Lebanon (20 to 24 Jan 2008).
 
07 Jan 2008 PM launches NHS Plan at King’s
The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown MP, today unveiled his plans for the future of the NHS in a keynote speech at King’s College London, crediting the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing & Midwifery for its 'modern reputation for outstanding professionalism, excellence in research and world leadership in the training of nurses'.
 
01 Jan 2008 Delegation from School of Nursing at University of Sao Paulo
Members of the University of Sao Paulo (USP) faculty visited the School on Thursday 3 January 2008 for a week. Ian Fielding from the international office also met with the delegation.
