Jointly organised with the Centre for Research in Midwifery and Childbirth Thames Valley University, the aim of the day was to bring together doctoral students and their supervisors working in a range of disciplines, and provide an opportunity for students to plan for life after a PhD, give presentations on their research, generating discussion among people working in a shared area of interest. Over 30 students and supervisors attended from the UK, Belgium and Italy, representing obstetrics, neonatology, midwifery, sociology, public health, psychology, anthropology and reproductive health.

The event was organised and chaired by Professor Jane Sandall who also spoke about 'Life after the PhD', Professor Celia Davies, Director of the NIHR Research for Patient Benefit Programme, spoke about 'Getting Involved in the Research for Patient Benefit Programme', and Professor Debra Bick from Thames Valley University and editor of Midwifery spoke about 'Do's and don'ts of turning the PhD into articles for publication'.

The event was enthusiastically welcomed by Professor Davies and the attendees who welcomed the opportunity to discuss their work with colleagues from other disciplines, and more are planned for 2008.
