Florence Nightingale Seminar - Eileen Sills CBE
Fridays with a difference:
Developing a responsive approach to monitoring the standards of nursing & midwifery care
Eileen Sills and Anne Marie Rafferty
On Wednesday 20 June 2007 Eileen Sills CBE, Chief Nurse and Director of Clinical Services at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, gave a Florence Nightingale seminar entitled ‘Fridays with a difference – developing a responsive approach to monitoring the standards of nursing and midwifery care.’
Eileen Sills was introduced by the Head of the FNSNM, Professor Anne Marie Rafferty, who outlined her many great achievements. Eileen has had a number of senior nursing and general management posts across London and was appointed to her first Director of Nursing post in 1999 at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. In July 2001 she moved to Whipps Cross University Hospital as their Director of Nursing becoming Deputy Chief executive in 2004, just before she left she had a period of being the Acting Chief Executive.
Eileen received a CBE in the 2003 New Years Honour’s list and has a master’s degree in Health Service Management from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
The presentation briefly set out the way nurse management has evolved over the past 30 years and the challenges the NHS face in building the patients' confidence in the standard of nursing and midwifery care. Reference was made to government initiatives and modernising nursing careers but the main focus of the presentation was based on the work undertaken at Guy’s & St Thomas’ is the last 12 months on enhancing the visible clinical leadership, monitoring standards of care and attempting to make a real difference.
The audience found the seminar very inspiring and had many comments and questions afterwards. The seminar was followed by a wine reception.
