Midwifery course shortlisted for award

The first ever course for health professionals on female genital mutilation from the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing & Midwifery has been shortlisted in the Excellence in Midwifery Education category of this year’s Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Awards.

The course, entitled ‘A clinical and academic programme of education on female genital mutilation for midwives and doctors’ was developed by Dr Gillian Aston, Lecturer in Midwifery & Women's Health Studies at the School, in collaboration with Comfort Momoh MBE, a specialist midwife in female genital mutilation at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

The short and long-term health implications of female genital mutilation can be severe, and include both physical and psychological injury. The course helps midwives and doctors develop the appropriate skills, sensitivity and cultural competence to address the needs of affected women and girls.

Winning entries will be announced at an awards ceremony in January in London.
