Gold Standard Review Recommends Midwife-led Care for Women

Pregnant A systematic review of research led by Jane Sandall, Professor of Midwifery and Women's Health at the School, has concluded that all women should be offered midwife-led models of care, and women should be encouraged to ask for this option.

Based on 11 trials involving 12,276 women, the Cochrane Review found that women who had midwife-led models of care had a reduced risk of losing a baby before 24 weeks and an increased chance of a spontaneous birth, initiation of breastfeeding and a feeling of being in control during labour, among other benefits.

Cochrane Reviews are internationally regarded as the highest level of independent evidence on which to base clinical decision-making.
