Establishing a collaboration in Shanghai
During a visit to Shanghai by Professors Ian Norman and Alison While, Li Gui, a past visiting scholar of the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery introduced them to Colonel Dr Shen Gu, Dean of the School of Nursing, Second Military Medical University (SMMU).
SMMU School of Nursing, which dates from 1949, was one of the first in China to establish a Bachelor degree programme and was the first to set up a doctor in nursing programme in 2003. The School also hosts the Nursing Journal of the People’s Liberation Army, the leading Chinese language academic nursing journal, and has received numerous awards from the Chinese government, including the National Outstanding Group Award, in 2008.
The visit started with a ceremony at which the Vice President of the University, Dr Yan Xu, made Professor While a Visiting Professor, and Professor While gave a keynote lecture on the work of nurses in multi-disciplinary teams in the field of chronic disease management to university staff and students. Subsequently Professors While and Norman gave two invited lectures on nursing research and publishing in English language journals. These lectures drew on examples of papers submitted by Chinese scholars to the International Journal of Nursing Studies, which is hosted by the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery and the professors’ past experience of joint publication with Chinese research collaborators.
A memorandum of understanding between the two Schools was signed to take forward international research collaboration and development of SMMU School of Nursing staff.
