The Art and Science of Mental Health Nursing

King’s professor launches new edition of foundational text

The key role that mental health nurses can play in promoting the mental health of the population as a whole is the main message of a new edition of the best selling foundational text for mental health nurses, “The Art and Science of Mental Health Nursing”, released this month.

The first edition of the book, edited by Professor Ian Norman at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing & Midwifery and Iain Ryrie, a health care research consultant, quickly became the best selling textbook for mental health nurses according to Amazon UK and has since become an established core text on undergraduate mental health nursing programmes. Its key message of recovery-oriented practice has been highly influential at the international policy level.

The new edition calls for mental health nurses to move beyond work with individuals and families and promote the mental health of the population as a whole, and encourages nursing interventions to change negative attitudes towards mental disorder. Further, it has been extended and substantially revised to incorporate changes to the policy and legal context of mental health nursing in the UK and reflects advances in treatment and theory underpinning mental health care.

“In today’s uncertain times, there is an ever-increasing need to equip mental health nurses with new tools for safeguarding health and wellbeing,” comments Professor Norman. “This new edition has been designed to assist mental health nurses in contributing to the creation of environments in which people can flourish. It highlights the role of nurses in helping people find meaning and purpose in their lives and emphasises how mental health can be promoted through lifestyle strategies and the medium of patients’ relationships with their families.”

Notably, the new edition includes a foreword by Matt Muijen, Regional Advisor for Mental Health World Health Organisation (WHO) Europe. “This book sends a signal about the scope and priorities of mental health care in general and might be read as a vision of the future, of what can be achieved,” comments Matt. “It has the potential to challenge and inform, and change practice nationally and internationally.”

Incorporating seven new chapters covering topics such as the patient with dementia, future directions in public mental health and taking recovery to society, the new edition comprises contributions from an expert group of clinicians and researchers across a range of disciplines. Case studies are integrated throughout to illustrate the practical application of the material along with overviews, conclusions, questions for reflection and discussion, and an annotated bibliography guiding the reader towards more detailed reading.

Professor Norman has worked in the mental health field for many years as a clinician and researcher and has an extensive publication record. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Nursing Studies, which has the highest impact factor of any non-specialist nursing journal in the world (Thomson Scientific). Iain Ryrie has varied and extensive experience in research, evaluation and practice development and has held senior operational and R&D positions in NHS Trusts, academic departments and charitable foundations.

"Although there are a number of books of this nature, this book is clearly in a superior league, and is presented in a format which is easily read and accessible. It is very difficult to find criticism with this book as it serves to explore countless aspects providing a wealth of research, case studies and current policies and service provision. A must for all students."
