Department of Mechanical Engineering

We strive to engineer solutions to problems as diverse as global warming, the building of intelligent robots, and the reconstruction of the human body. We realise that our major impact on the world is the production of very smart graduates and post-graduates. Thus we highly value and nurture engineering talent through our BEng, MEng and MSc taught programmes, and PhD research programmes.

All members of the department publish in international journals (e.g. Proceedings of the Royal Society, IChemE, ASME and IEEE journals), while our grant income has a strong commercial component which reflects the high number of industrial and bio-medical collaborations (e.g. Ford, Volvo, Schlumberger (France), LEGO Engineering Systems, Dstl). There is a strong knowledge transfer theme to our research output, which is delivered by a number of mechanisms including Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (e.g. Guartel Ltd, System Technology Ltd), industrially relevant MSc degree courses and commercial exploitation of research.

Our research is mainly focussed in:
Experimental and Computational Laboratory for the Analysis of Turbulence (ECLAT)
Centre for Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems (CMMS)
Materials Research Group (MRG)
Intelligent Systems and Control (ISaC)
Biomedical Engineering (BMED)

We welcome research and teaching enquires of any sort - please do contact us if you think we can help in any way.
