Doctoral Supervision
Dr Hill is happy supervise doctoral theses on any aspect of the security, politics and colonial histories of Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Nigeria.
Biography
Dr Hill joined the department in July 2005 after completing his BSc Econ, MSc Econ and PhD in the Department of International Politics at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. He was the Academic Director for the Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Maritime) from 2006 to 2007, and will perform the same role for the Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Land) from January 2010 until August 2011. Dr Hill’s research falls within the area of African security studies. In particular, he is interested in Islamism and the activities of Islamist insurgent and terror groups in North and West Africa, corruption and security in Nigeria, and the challenges of state and nation building in postcolonial Africa.
Grants and Consultancy Work
- 22 September 2008–21 September 2009: Dr Hill was awarded an External Research Associates Program (ERAP) grant by the Strategic Studies Institute at the United States Army War College for his project 'Sufism in Northern Nigeria: A Force for Counter-Radicalisation?'
- 1 May 2008–31 May 2008: Dr Hill was commissioned by the British Peace Support Team (BPST) in South Africa to provide it with academic support as it helped the Department of Defence set up a Peace Mission Training Centre (PMTC). The purpose of the centre is to provide South African military personnel, police officers, and civil servants with pre-deployment training before they are sent on peace support operations.
