Professor Andrew Wright
Professor of religious and theological education
About me
I was born and brought up in Enfield, North London, where I attended a local Church of England comprehensive school before studying for a degree in theology here at King's College. Having completed a PGCE at Cambridge University, I taught religious education for seven years. During that period I was head of department in three contrasting schools: two were located in the inner city and one in rural Oxford. Of these, one was a county school, one a Church of England foundation, and one a joint Anglican-Roman Catholic school.
Further study, at the London Institute of Education, led to the award of an MA in Religious Education in 1988, followed by a PhD in 1995. I was initially supervised by the late Edwin Cox, and my thesis examined the integrity and provenance of contemporary religious education with reference to modernism, post-modernism and critical realism. Before taking up my present post in the Department of Education & Professional Studies at King's, I was lecturer in religious education at the Institute of Education (1988-1991) and senior lecturer in religious education at Roehampton Institute (1991-1995).
I am currently co-ordinator of the Centre for Theology, Religion and Culture (CTRC), which focuses on research at the interface of religion, theology, education and culture in the department. The Centre provides an academic home for seven faculty members and around 100 students, approximately forty of whom are engaged in doctoral research. Outside King's, I am chair of the Association of Lecturers in Religion and Education (AULRE), and was recently a member of the writing group that produced the new non-statutory national framework for religious education.
