Professor Patrick Le Galès
Biography
Professor Le Galès received his PhD in Sociology from the University of Paris (Paris X Nanterre) in 1991 and his “habilitation” in politics HDR (French post-doctoral qualification which allows the holder to supervise PhD candidates) at the University of Rennes I in 1997. He is a graduate of Sciences Po in Paris (1985), obtained a research MA in sociology and then an MLitt in politics from Nuffield College at Oxford University in 1989.
Prior to joining Sciences Po in 1998, he was a Research Fellow at the Observatoire Sociologique du Changement at Sciences Po Paris after his doctorate, a CNRS Research Fellow and Assistant Professor at CRAPE/IEP Rennes for five years, and a Jean Monnet Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence (Schuman Centre) in 1996-1997. He has been a visiting professor at UCLA (1999 and 2003) and Oxford (2002-2003). For shorter period, he was also a visiting professor at the Universities Salford, Warwick, Venezia and Bicocca Milan. He won the a CNRS/GRALE prize or his PhD comparing urban policies and economic development in France and Britain and the bronze medal award for research (special award for young researchers) from the French National Centre for Scientific Research in 1996. He was a Stein Rokkan Prize winner (Unesco/ECPR) for his book European Cities, Social Conflicts and Governance, published by OUP in 2002. In 2007 he was awarded the prize for excellence in research of the French Political Science Association.
He is a former editor of the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research (1998-2005) and is now co-editor of three series of books: U Sociologie (Colin, Paris), Gouvernances (Presses de Sciences Po, Paris) and Urban and Social Change (Blackwell/Wiley). He sits on the editorial board of various journals including Socio Economic Review, Urban Studies, British Journal of Political Science, Journal of Public Policy, Environment and Planning C, European Political Science Review, Sociologica in Italy.

Research
Professor Le Galès' current research themes and projects include the following:
- Comparative public policy in Europe, state restructuring, governance, theories of public policies (policy networks, instruments of public policies): urban and regional policy, competition policy, decentralisation. Current research projects: The restructuring of the British state; Europeanisation of policy instruments within EU governance; Governance and Corruption in Ile de France (the greater Paris area)
- Urban sociology: social groups, the middle classes, students, regulation, governance. Currently: Research on the middle classes, mobility and cities, (qualitative and quantitative); comparison between Paris, London, Manchester, Milan, Madrid, Lyon
- Political economy/economic sociology: local economic development, local industrial systems.
Teaching
Patrick Le Galès is the academic director of the Master degree Strategies territoriales urbaines at Sciences Po. He also started the MPA at Sciences po (with E.Friedberg and M.Storper) and the forthcoming master “Governing the large metropolis”. He is the coordinator of the “city programme” at Sciences Po and a convenor of the research group on the restructuring of the state. He teaches on comparative public policy and the state, Governance, cities, urban policies, European societies. He has supervised ten completed Phd Dissertations.
At King’s, he teaches “public policy and the governance of complex societies” on the MA Public Policy programme and “urban policy in a globalising world” on the MA Cities programme. He is a member of the Cities research group.
