Research
Lidija’s research stems from interest in urban communities, more specifically migrant groups within cities. To pursue this, Lidija’s PhD is focusing on Serbian migrant groups in London, more specifically on the inter-ethnic interaction between the three waves of their diaspora and the degree of association between the voluntary and forced migrants in this group. The ‘urban dimension’ emerges through a consideration of the significance and place-specific aspects of being migrants in a global city such as London, as opposed to more regional areas, also with a view to exploring the notion of cultural fragmentation among metropolitan migrant groups. The title of the project has yet to be finalised. This research is AHRC-funded.
Biography
Lidija was born in Belgrade of the former Yugoslavia, but began her schooling in London when her family moved there in 1987. She then attended secondary school in Kuwait but was back in England to finish her A-levels, finally coming came full circle to attend university in her beloved London, studying English Literature at Queen Mary. Lidija graduated with First Class BA Honours and received the Westfield Trust award. Then, following a clichéd year in publishing, she entered the MA in Cities, Culture and Social Change programme at King’s College London, before settling down to do her PhD.
Lidija’s personal pursuits have included editing the Queen Mary student newspaper, volunteering for a London-based charity and spending time travelling around Japan and India, when she also worked as a volunteer for a community health and development organisation in New Delhi. Her latest extra-curricular venture has been to sign up for dance-training at Pineapple Studios, just in case academia doesn’t work out!
