Biography
Raj has a decade of experience of working in armed conflict, complex humanitarian emergencies and disaster management. His international field postings have included experience as a peacekeeper while a serving Canadian Army Officer in Bosnia-Herzegovina (1993-1994), and 8 years with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Russian Federation/Chechnya, Darfur and Iraq.
Raj's more recent work as an independent researcher and consultant has brought him toMozambique, Israel/Gaza Strip and the Philippines, working with clients including the World Food Programme (WFP), Action Against Hunger (ACF), the SPHERE project, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the Folke Bernadotte Academy, B'tselem and others.
Raj holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Architecture from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, and is currently a PhD candidate at King's College London. His current research interests include the link between State-Building and State-Failing, Humanitarian Protection and the Responsibility to Protect. He has established expertise and publications on subjects including multinational/multi-agency coordination, project management, protection of the civilian population, and civil-military relations.
