Biography
Sweta Chakraborty is currently a 3rd year PhD student at the King’s Centre for Risk Management. She is originally from NYC and joined KCRM after graduating in 2006 from Carnegie Mellon University with a BSc in Decision Science and a BA in International Relations. She spent her third undergraduate year at the London School of Economics, exploring her interest in risk analysis from a European perspective.
While her PhD specifically explores risk perception and communication related to chronic prescription drug taking, she is broadly interested in pharmaceutical and public health issues on a global scale. This stems from her work experience at Pfizer Inc. and extensive research looking at public reactions to drug safety scares.

Research
PhD title: Communicating Risk in a Distrustful Environment: A Critical Analysis on the Role of Trust in Patient Adherence to Treatment Regimens
Sweta is exploring the extent to which trust plays a role in patient adherence to their drug treatment regimens in relation to all other potential factors. She is applying the mental models approach in order to uncover implicit attitudes that may be linked to a patient’s decision behind complying with his or her physician’s treatment instructions.
Key areas of research: Risk perception/communication/regulation, social trust, mental models methodology, pharmaceutical and public health sector
Supervisors: Professor Ragnar Lofstedt and Dr Henry Rothstein
