AHRC profiles 'new kind of military history'
Work carried out by Dr William Philpott (pictured) of the Department of War Studies during a period of funded research leave has recently been profiled by the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC). Read the full case study on the AHRC website.
Palestinian Ambassador visits King's
The Palestinian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Professor Manuel Hassassian gave a talk at King’s College London yesterday at the invitation of the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence (ICSR), a newly established centre within the School's Department of War Studies.
New ESRC-funded project in Language & Literacy
The Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) have recently awarded funds to Professor Constant Leung and Professor Brian Street to carry out research that will enhance understanding of policy consequences in terms of classroom realities associated with current government initiatives on widening participation.
Commentary published in Nature
A commentary in Nature on the need to regulate direct-to-consumer genetic and genomic testing, which currently allows people to analyse how susceptible they are to certain diseases, has been written by Dr Barbara Prainsack, a Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Biomedicine & Society (CBAS) at King’s. Managing World Cities
A number of School staff will be speaking in October at the first Managing World Cities conference in Hong Kong. This event is the first in a series which aims to establish a tripartite research collaboration focused on policy and management challenges in Hong Kong, London & New York.
New Head of Department - Department of Mangement
Ewan Ferlie AcSS, Professor of Public Services Management, was appointed as the Head of the Department of Management on 1 October. He comes to King's from Royal Holloway where he led a major process of development. His own research interests lie in the field of organisational restructuring & change in public services organisations.
New Director of Research
Sharon Gewirtz has just taken up the position of Director of Research in SSPP. Professor Gewirtz is co-director of the Centre for Public Policy Research in the Department of Education and Professional Studies. She is looking forward to working closely with colleagues across the School to collectively strengthen the School’s research environment.
EU report on radicalisation published
King’s academic Dr Peter Neumann, Director of the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence (ICSR) at King’s College London is urging European governments to pay attention to the situation in European prisons as they are likely to become major hubs for radicalisation and recruitment of Islamist militants in a report published this month.
New Head of School
Professor Denise Lievesley, one of the country’s leading social statisticians, who has campaigned for evidence to be used as the basis for the development of sound public policies, is the new Head of School.
King's Centre for Military Health highly commended
At a recent awards ceremony attended by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the King’s Centre for Military Health Research (KCMHR) was highly commended in two categories. Simon Wessely, Director of KCMHR said: ‘It is very encouraging for all of us to be recognised in this way, but perhaps even more importantly, to see the fruits of our work actually making a difference to the health of the Armed Forces.’

Major Wellcome Trust Award
Professor Clare Williams, director of the Centre for Biomedicine & Society, will lead a five year programme of research, funded by the Wellcome Trust, on 'translational ethics' and direct the London & Brighton Translational Ethics Centre (LABTEC).

£1.4 million for Science & Education research
Academics from the College’s Department of Education & Professional Studies have won £1.4 million to undertake research to help the next generation of school children develop the mathematics and science skills needed to keep the UK competitive. Read more.
Gerontology findings presented
Following the Publication of the First UK Prevalence Study on Elder Mistreatment Simon Biggs of the Institute of Gerontology presented findings to a special conference of the European Commission in Brussels. The Conference, consisting of Politicians, Civil Servants and representatives of NGOs was chaired by Vladimir Spidla, Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities and represented a significant breakthrough in recognition of this social problem. A video has been released to European news networks describing the nature of elder mistreatment, in which Professor Biggs is interviewed.

Healthyplanet.org launched
An innovative new website, drawing on the research of a King’s geographer will allow individuals and companies to sponsor areas of protected parks throughout the world, choosing from more than 70,000 different parks or heritage sites in danger. The website www.healthyplanet.org is now live.
The system employs Reader in Physical Geography, Dr Mark Mulligan’s land use change alerting products to prioritise where individuals should adopt land, and will feed back information on land use change to individuals using Google Earth. For more details please click here.
Revd Professor Alister McGrath joins Department of Education & Professional Studies
Scientist, and former atheist, turned internationally-regarded theologian and prolific author, Revd Professor Alister McGrath, has been appointed to the newly created Chair of Theology and Education in the Department of Education and Professional Studies. Professor McGrath famously challenged Richard Dawkins’ views of religion. For more details please click here.
Professor McGrath’s appointment coincides with an innovative, new masters programme which has been designed by DEPS in a unique cooperation between theologians and ministers, the programme combines intellectual depth with a wide range of practical issues – from contemporary worship to Fair Trade.
The deparrment also offers a Doctorate in Ministry which is designed to offer clergy, ministers, and those in full-time church-related ministry an opportunity to pursue doctoral level studies via a programme which is relevant to their ministerial and theological interests.
