MA Air Power in the Modern World (APMW)
Programme description
“I recommend, without hesitation, Air Power in the Modern World for anyone who wishes to develop their knowledge in Air Power at Masters Level”. – Tim Croydon, current student
Based on the successful War in the Modern World masters degree, Air Power in the Modern World (APMW) is a distance-learning, part-time masters degree from the Department of War Studies, King’s College London. One of the world’s top 25 universities, a degree from King’s College London opens doors.
Air Power in the Modern World addresses the needs of the air forces today to equip their personnel to perform their duties in the new strategic arena. The Royal Airforce in the UK has responded to the ambiguities and uncertainties of the current environment and to its own diminishing size by providing its personnel with structured education that significantly develops their strategic understanding, intellectual dexterity and problem-solving abilities.
This degree has been created, working in partnership with the RAF Centre for Air Power Studies, the Joint Services Command and Staff College’s Defence Studies Department, and the Department of War Studies at King’s. The next start date is 13 September, 2010.

Engagement
Air Power in the Modern World students are invited to attend the frequent extracurricular Department of War Studies seminars and lectures in London if commitments allow. We encourage involvement with the Department and our students are always welcome to visit us in London: many do.
You will be invited to attend the graduation ceremony if you can be in London for it. See some photos of the recent War in the Modern World July 2009 and January 2010 graduations.

Student body
Air Power in the Modern World students are in mixed tutor groups with War in the Modern World students for the first two core modules, and for your option. Your fellow students are a diverse, wide-ranging and international group employed as lawyers, consultants, journalists, bankers, serving military officers: they work in business, non-governmental organizations, and for governments. All of them bring to the study of modern war a unique blend of experience and insight.
Current student Andrew Tidmarsh says: “The online, networked nature of the course means that interaction with other students and your tutor can take place at any time of day at the touch of the button - there is no need to wait for a group tutorial. I have found the discussions generated by the course material extremely stimulating and thought-provoking.”

Flexibility
Designed for students who want a first-class academic experience, and who need the flexibility that e-learning provides, Air Power in the Modern World has been created to allow you to study while you are working. The majority of our students lead very busy lives, often involving frequent travel so designed-in flexibility is critical.
The programme assessment pattern has been created with this in mind. You can do your online seminar presentation working around particularly busy times at work, or in your personal life.

Accessible 24/7/365
Because our students are living, working and studying across many time zones, it is a special feature of Air Power in the Modern World that it is always ‘on’ – 24/7/365 (except for notified maintenance downtimes).
How long?
Air Power in the Modern World is a two-year, part-time programme. Exceptionally, and if student numbers allow, it may be possible to study two modules concurrently.
