Dr Bowen is a Lecturer in Defence Studies. He studied at the undergraduate level at the Department of International Politics, Aberystwyth University, between 2007 and 2010. He stayed on to study at the Master's level in Strategic Studies in 2010-11.
Dr Bowen successfully secured an Economic and Social Research Council 3+1 scholarship to pursue a second Master's degree in Security Studies and a PhD on spacepower theory at Aberystwyth, the latter being concluded in early 2016. During doctoral study Dr Bowen was granted a Visiting Scholar position at the Space Policy Institute at the George Washington University, Washington, D.C., and was the convenor of the Security Research Group at the Department of International Politics.
Before joining the Defence Studies Department, Dr Bowen was a Teaching Fellow at the Department of International Politics, Aberystwyth University, and taught subjects such as 19th century military history and intelligence studies. He has also taught in areas such as nuclear weapons and strategy, modern warfare and covert operations, including in both the Welsh and English languages. Dr Bowen has on many occasions appeared on BBC radio and television current affairs and news programmes as a warfare and international security expert on both Welsh and English media platforms.
His primary areas of research are spacepower theory and contemporary military space activities, Clausewitzian approaches to understanding war and strategic theories more generally. However, his research interests extend to strategic theory and military philosophy, particularly the unity and pedagogical aspects of seapower, airpower and Clausewitzian theories.
Dr Bowen has published on the security dilemmas presented by space junk and their removal as well as European space strategy. He is currently working on drafting a monograph on the spacepower theory he developed in his doctoral thesis, about which a short post can be read on the Defence Studies Department's Defence-in-Depth blog.
