About me
Dr. Yinglin Ji joined DEPS, King’s as a British Academy Post Doctoral Research Fellow in October 2010. She received her MPhil (2005) and PhD (2009) in English and Applied Linguistics from the University of Cambridge. Her thesis dealt with language typology regarding spatial expressions and first language acquisition of motion expressions in Chinese children as compared to English and French age-matched children. Her main research interests include monolingual first language acquisition, second language acquisition by adults, and the relation between language and thought.
Research
My research is in the area of language acquisition and the interaction between language and cognition, especially in the acquisition of spatial expressions by monolingual children and bilingual adults. I’m particularly interested in how universal cognitive factors and language-specific differences affect first- and second-language acquisition in the domain of space. I’m currently the principal investigator of British Academy funded research project “Cognitive and linguistic representation of space in English and Chinese” (pf100022).
