About me

I am a Cognitive Linguist who specialises in Semantics and Pragmatics in Typical/Atypical Language Development and in Health Communication. To this end, I employ Psycholinguistic, Discourse Analytical and Corpus Linguistic approaches. My current teaching includes Psycholinguistics, Cognitive Linguistics, Discourse Analysis in Health/Medicine, and Quantitative Research Methods, in addition to supervision of MPhil/PhD students.

Research

Linguistic and Cognitive Develoment in Typical/Atypical Populations:

  • Comprehension of Metaphor, Metonymy, Overstatements/Hyperbole, Understatements/Litotes and Irony in Typically developing individuals;
  • Comprehension of Metaphor, Metonymy, Overstatements/Hyperbole, Understatements/Litotes and Irony in Autism;
  • Comprehension of Metaphor and Metonymy in Williams Syndrome (Williams Syndrome Foundation);
  • Theory of Mind in Williams Syndrome.

Cognitive approaches to Discourse/Text Analysis:
  • Consumer Perceptions and Attitudes towards EDCs and PPCPs in Drinking Water (Water Research Foundation);
  • The impact of language and cognition on compliance during a natural disaster (Leverhulme Trust);
  • Improving communication on Cryptosporidium and 'Boil Water' notices: Lessons from Pitsford (DWI/DEFRA).
  • Rhetoric of Medical research articles;
  • Lay and Professional conceptualisations of Immunisation;
  • Mental Health; 
  • Persuasion and Information in Extreme Weather Events.      

Language, Cognition and Behaviour:
