Aspires

Working with teachers

As part of our research, teachers from our intervention schools have been trying out existing resources that focus on careers in and from STEM during school lessons or in after-school clubs. Theachers and members of the ASPIRES team have been meeting together at a series of professional development events.

One aim for this academic year is to collect together case studies of effective practice with the aim of creating a ‘Careers’ section on the website of the Association for Science Education (ASE).

The Project Schools

We are grateful to the participating staff, the headteachers and the students of the schools working with us: Alleyn’s School; City of London School; Haydon School; Hayes School, Ibstock Place School;London Nautical School, Mulberry School for Girls and Park High School.

The UKRC

We are also grateful to colleagues from the UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (UKRC) who have contributed to the development of this strand of work.

They carried out three focus groups, one with teachers and two with groups of Year 8 boys at two different schools in London.

The main aim of the focus groups was to gain a more in-depth understanding of the role teachers feel they play in promoting science during their lessons and what the outcomes are for their pupils.

Science Teacher Journal Club

The first virtual outing of the Science Teacher Journal Club got off to a flying start on Twitter, discussing children's attitudes to science.
