Research

The research agendas for the Department of Social Science, Health & Medicine will develop in line with the interests and background of the faculty. The following are some of the likely areas of research:

  • The social determinants of national and global inequalities in heath and disease and the challenges of policy development to address these.
  • The changing territory of mental health and mental illness, and the social, ethical and political implications of developments in psychiatry and neuroscience, and of the rise of new social movements around mental health.
  • Bioethical issues arising in practical settings at the interface of biomedicine, health care and society.
  • The rise of movements for ‘people’s health’ in developing countries and the implications of transformations to new models of community healthcare.
  • The challenges of health and social care and the social, economic and policy consequences of ageing populations in both developed and developing worlds.
  • The changing character of health professions, in the context of new global patterns of training and migration of health and social care workers.
  • New models of efficiency and value for money in developing health and social care policy and the challenges of rationing of health care and social care.
  • The promises and perils of advanced biomedicine; responsible innovation in biomedicine, and the problems of translation from laboratory to clinical application in genomics, stem cells and neuroscience.
  • The nature and consequences of the intense commercialisation and capitalisation of health care in pharmaceuticals and medical devices, in the context of the global market and developing healthcare industries in emerging economics.
  • Who decides on good healthcare outcomes, and how? The definition and measurement of health and social outcomes by governments, insurers, professionals and patients.
  • Research on care work, labour market conditions and profiles.
