A conversation with Professor Mats Berdal and Dr Matthew Preston on the UN after the Cold War  and its role in efforts to mitigate, contain and resolve civil wars.

Speakers: Dr Matthew Preston, Head of the Multilateral Research Group, Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Professor Mats Berdal, Department of War Studies.

The speakers will cover the records of UN peacekeeping and peacebuilding interventions, the rise of "humanitarianism" culminating in the idea of a "responsibility to protect" (R2P), divergencies of view on the (R2P) and where the doctrine stands after Libya and Syria and Security Council politics (possibility or not for reform).

Description
A major scholarly conference organised jointly by the Department of War Studies and Waterloo 200, a body set up to co-ordinate the commemoration of the battle during the upcoming bicentenary. Internationally recognised scholars will present papers over the course of these two days discussing the battle and its impact on the nineteenth century and beyond.
