Speaker: Nicholas Williams, Head of the Operations Section B (Afghanistan) within the International Staff at NATO HQ in Brussels.
In November 2009, Mr Williams completed two and a half years in Afghanistan, first as political adviser to ISAF forces in the South, based in Kandahar, and latterly as Deputy NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Kabul.
By profession a British career defence official, he has worked extensively in conflict and post-conflict countries, including Iraq and the Balkans. Other positions include Assistant Director for Counter-terrorism in the British MoD, and several posts at NATO, including speech writer to three NATO Secretary Generals.
Mr. Williams was awarded the Order of the British Empire for having negotiated the first post-Saddam provincial Council in Basra in 2005. In 2007, he was awarded the Queen’s medal for his distinguished services in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
