Professors in the Department

At the Graduation Ceremony on the 23 January 2012, William Philpott, Joe Maiolo, and Peter Neumann were each awarded personal chairs in their respective areas of research.

Professor Philpott is Secretary General of the British Commission for Military History and  is currently chair of the University of London’s Military Education Committee, and sits on the council of the National Army Museum. His recent international history of the battles of the Somme, 'Bloody Victory: The Sacrifice on the Somme and the Making of the Twentieth Century' won the 2009 Society for Army Historical Research Templer Medal and the US Western Front Association’s Norman B. Tomlinson Jr Book prize.

Joe Maiolo is Professor of International History and is an editor of The Journal of Strategic Studies, a member of the editorial board for Intelligence & National Security, and a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. In the Department of War Studies, he is the programme director of the MA in Intelligence and International Security is also Director of Graduate Studies in the School of Social Science and Public Policy.

Peter Neumann is Professor of Security Studies at the War Studies Department, and serves as Director of the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation (ICSR). Professor Neumann serves as investigator for the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at the University of Maryland and is an Affiliate of the European Commission's European Network of Experts on Radicalisation.

MacArthur Foundation awards $1.65 million to CSSS

Description
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has announced a grant of $1.65 million to the Centre for Science and Security Studies (CSSS) to train future nuclear experts. CSSS, a research group in the Department of War Studies, is one of 16 organisations receiving funding to help prevent nuclear terrorism and strengthen nuclear security around the globe.
