Research Interests

  • Just war theory and the challenges of asymmetric warfare
  • Carl Schmitt, in particular his Theory of the Partisan
  • German anti-terrorism legislation and the concept of Bürgeropfer (self-sacrifice of the citizen)


After having studied philosophy, Roman Catholic theology and Canon Law in Fulda (TheologischeFakultät Fulda, Germany), Oxford (Blackfriars) and Rome (Pontifical University of the Holy Cross), Sebastian holds a First Class MA in Theology.

He currently works as a visiting research associate at the Marjan Centre for the Study of Conflict & Conservation, Department of War Studies, examining the concept of conservation of resources as part of a new theory of just war.

Sebastian is a fellow of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung,a political foundation linked to the CDU (Christian Democratic Union), the major Conservative party in the German Federal Assembly and is currently training to become a Roman Catholic priest.
