Posted on 18/04/2012
Rob Imrie, Professor of Geography, has won the 2012 Supervisory Excellence Award for both the School of Social Science & Public Policy and the overall prize for Supervisory Excellence across the College.
The award defines ‘supervisory excellence’ as encapsulating, among other traits:
-
History of past supervisory success, e.g. ensuring submission of theses in 3 years (full time)
-
Commitment to pastoral care of supervisees
-
Engagement with personal and professional development of supervisees, (which could be demonstrated through the activities students participate in during their studies, their career progression, publications, quality of research project etc)
-
Innovative supervisory practice.
Professor Imrie was praised for the confidence he inspires in students under his supervision. All students have presented papers and organised sessions at major international conferences and published their work in internationally recognised journals.
One PhD student said: “Rob’s excellence as a supervisor is a combination of academic quality, pedagogical skills and commitment to his students. In my case, having Imrie as a supervisor was the reason to apply to King’s College London”. Another student commented: “Rob takes care to help build his students' careers…it was a real encounter for me and I have learnt so many things from him.”
Doctoral students under his supervision have research interests in the following areas: urban governance and community development; the impact and implications of urban policy; the geographies of disability and the built environment.
Professor Imrie said, “It’s very pleasing to receive this award, to be part of the intellectual development of research students and to see them grow into progressive individuals with a commitment to the power of critique and the transformative possibilities of their work.”
The Supervisory Excellence Award will be presented by the Principal at one of the forthcoming graduation ceremonies. You can read more about the College’s Supervisory Excellence awards, and see complete lists of previous winners, on the Graduate School web pages.
