Unit Operations Manager
Jessica Marcos joined King's College London in February 2013 as an Administrator for the Centre for Science and Security Studies (CSSS) and the Centre for Defence Studies (CDS) in the Department of War Studies. Jessica started her new role as CSSS Operations Co-ordinator in January 2016 and commenced her studies for the Association of University Administrators (AUA) PGCert in Higher Education Administration, Management and Leadership in October 2016. Jessica went on to become Interim Business Manager for the School of Security Studies in December 2016.
Jessica has played a vital role in supporting the co-Directors of CSSS, Professor Wyn Bowen & Dr Chris Hobbs, in managing the Centre’s operations and acting as line manager to the professional service staff of the CSSS team. Jessica’s main duties as Operations Co-ordinator included day-to-day co-ordination of the Science & Security research programme, the oversight and operation of CSSS financial systems, budgets and accounts, organising complex travel, arranging office space and equipment for staff, development of job descriptions, development of proposals, financial reporting, liaising with King’s Business and Consultancy with regards to many of the Centre’s non-research /innovation projects, organising job interviews, interview panels and inductions for new staff.
A significant part of the job also involved logistical management and co-ordination of the professional development courses (PDCs) and workshops that CSSS offers in the UK and around the globe. The organisation of these events involved extensive international travel and frequent interaction with international partners, subject matter experts and collaborators. Alongside this, the role involved the organisation and logistical oversight of expert roundtables and seminars and high-profile panel discussions.
The role also required a close working relationship with different members of CSSS and the School Head of Administration to make sure that, when carrying out its activities, the Centre complied with all financial and contractual requirements.
As Interim Business Manager Jessica managed the School’s financial resources, budgets, space, inductions for new staff, served as a panel member on interviews for professional service staff and organised various academic interviews for the School. Jessica also acted as School Safety Officer and developed a close working relationship with the Faculty Business Manager, Head of School Administration for War Studies, Head of Department and Head of School.
