Into Space: Exploring Space through Science

Space exploration continues to inspire imaginations all over the world. The application of space science is evident everywhere in our daily lives, from watching television or predicting the weather, to performing medical exams. How men and women adapt to microgravity conditions and to living and working in environments such as space stations has contributed enormously to knowledge in many different health-related fields.

The class ‘Into Space’ is designed to raise your awareness and understanding of mankind’s final frontier. It will give an overview of the astronomy and physics behind manned spaceflight, before heading on to the science needed to allow us to leave planet Earth behind, from Aristotle to Einstein and beyond. You will also learn about space missions of the past, present and future and examine the physiological and psychological reactions of mind and body to the hostile environment of space.

This class will consist of a minimum of 40 contact hours with teaching taking place between 9 am and 5 pm from Monday to Friday.

Learning outcomes and objectives

By the end of the course, you should have:

  • understood the benefits that manned space flight has brought to science and technology.
  • learned how to become an astronaut and how to adapt to microgravity conditions.
  • understood living and working in microgravity environments.
  • understood how the body and the mind cope with the hostile environment of space.
  • learned how microgravity, hypo-gravity and hyper-gravity are simulated on Earth.
  • gained knowledge of scientific and technological spinoffs – the space to terrestrial knowledge transfer that has benefitted human existence on Earth.

Module assessment - more information

No formal assessment but up to 3 hours of reading/tasks may be assigned throughout the course to be completed outside of class time. Upon completion of the class, students will receive a letter of recommendation and certificate of completion.
