Course Content
This is a full time intensive course with teaching taking place from Monday to Friday. Each length of course will include the following:
You will follow a general ‘English for Academic Purposes’ syllabus in the morning, with these classes helping you prepare for the written assessment of each stage. The morning classes focus on the following:

Developing your reading and writing skills so that you will be able to cope with the demands of your degree

Effective essay structure, including guidance on referencing, conducting research and using primary and secondary source material

Awareness of the importance of critical thinking and critical analysis

Developing persuasive, valid arguments and expressing an individual voice

Developing your listening and speaking skills to help you understand lectures and be able to participate effectively in tutorials/seminars

Developing your academic grammar and vocabulary

Developing your awareness of the language required to function effectively on a day-to-day basis in an English-speaking environment.
You will also have a weekly class dedicated to focusing on developing your oral ability to express ideas clearly and concisely. Classes focus on discussion and seminar participation and develop the ability to present and defend a position, as well as listen and respond to other people’s ideas. The classes also focus on developing your presentation skills.
Your progress is monitored carefully by class tutors. Regular tutorials are arranged throughout the course, during which tutors give you individual feedback on your progress.
Every week you will attend a guest lecture on a range of topics such as the English Language, Scientific Research and the English Legal System. These lectures are given by King’s academic staff and visiting lecturers and provide you with practice in listening to a live lecture on an academic subject.
