Widening Participation

What is widening participation?

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) has pinpointed a need to “promote and provide the opportunity of successful participation in higher education to everyone who can benefit from it. This is vital for social justice and economic competitiveness”.

HEFCE defines Widening Participation as “addressing the large discrepancies in the take-up of higher education opportunities between different social groups ...(and)... ensuring equality of opportunity for disabled students, mature students, women and men, and all ethnic groups”. More information can be found on the HEFCE website.

King’s College London welcomes high calibre students regardless of their background. We work hard to support potential students who face barriers to entering higher education and are developing a widening participation strategy to provided targeted support to those who need it most.

The majority of our Widening Participation work is delivered locally through our major new programme K+. A pilot scheme is currently targeted at Year 9 and Year 12 students around Greater London.
