Module description

This module focuses on an approach to studying religion which moves beyond official doctrines to understand how religious people make meaning through everyday practices and interactions. The module will provide a hands-on opportunity to learn about various fieldwork methods in the study of lived religion, which may include online ethnography, observation, interviews, family history, media research and material culture analysis. The seminars will contextualise the lived religion approach and explore key social scientific concepts for lived religion scholars, alongside opportunities for discussion of various case studies. Participation in the module provides unique opportunities for students to engage with London’s diverse religious communities, and to investigate the ways in which lived religion is shaped within specific social, historical and cultural contexts.
