Project Alpha’s research and activities on illicit trade, non-proliferation, and sanctions include:

  • Researching and publishing examples of illicit trade
  • Researching the manufacturing base of proliferation-sensitive items in order to understand the size, shape and technical capability of the supply chain;
  • Publishing research findings in peer-reviewed publications;
  • Creating tools and visualisations based on in-depth open source research;
  • Research and analysis including on the effectiveness of sanctions and best practice for the creation and enforcement of sanctions;
  • Running workshops and training exercises on sanctions implementation and designation processes, including using open source evidence.

To improve the implementation of trade controls, Project Alpha is engaged in the following activities:

Project Alpha supports and informs efforts to optimise the non-proliferation regime by:

  • Supporting implementation of relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions, including Security Council Resolution 1540;
  • Supporting the IAEA, including with implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran;
  • Providing support to institutions like the EU and UN, including the UN Panels of Experts for relevant sanction regimes.
