Nine new scholarships for MSc Global Mental Health

King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine have been awarded £355,276 to fund nine new scholarships for the MSc in Global Mental Health.

The grant, awarded by Janssen Pharmaceutica, will support scholarships for training outstanding future leaders in the field of global mental health during the 2014-18 academic years.

The programme is open to honours graduates from around the world and is a one-year MSc course of study in global mental health research, policy and practice taught jointly Institute of Psychiatry (IoP) and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, through the joint Centre for Global Mental Health.

Dr Rosie Mayston, Programme Leader at the IoP at King's for the MSc in Global Mental Health, says: “We’re thrilled to be able to offer nine more scholarships for our MSc in Global Mental Health. This course is unique and the only one of its kind in the world. Due to the cross-disciplinary nature of our MSc, we attract students from a wide variety of backgrounds, who make an invaluable contribution to the area. Global mental health is an important aspect of our research and teaching portfolio. With the announcement of this scholarship fund, it’s very exciting to be able to offer this opportunity to prospective students.”

The MSc in Global Mental Health is designed to prepare graduates for careers in national mental health policy and planning, in epidemiological and mental health services research, and as mental health advisors and advocates in government ministries, international aid agencies and non-governmental organisations.

The scholarships cover students’ tuition, room and board, transportation, books, daily expenses and international travel to and from London. They are intended for students from or working in low- and middle-income countries, where the need for mental health care is disproportionately great. Scholarship winners are chosen by academic staff at the IoP and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

The MSc candidates in Global Mental Health receive training in epidemiological and health services research methods to equip them to monitor and evaluate mental health programmes. They also learn to devise locally appropriate and feasible strategies to reduce burden of mental health disorders at every level, from national health policy and systems to individual clinical interventions.
