Child autism expert joins the IoP
King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry (IoP) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Tony Charman to the IoP’s Department of Psychology.
Professor Charman joins the IoP at King's as Chair in Clinical Child Psychology from his previous roles at the University of London’s Institute of Education, and UCL’s Institute of Child Health. His main research interest is the investigation of social cognitive development in children with autism and the clinical application of this work via screening, diagnostic, epidemiological, intervention, outcome and 'at risk' studies.
Professor Charman says: “I am very excited at the prospect of returning to IoP nearly 25 years after I completed my training there. I look forward to extending my existing collaborations with colleagues across IoP and developing new collaborations and relationships.”
He has published more than 170 peer-reviewed papers and is the author of over 25 book chapters. He has been a member of the Guideline Development Group for two National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines for children and young people with autism. He is the current Chair of the Advisory Group to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Autism and has worked closely with a number of charities to advocate for services and positive policy development for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families.
The Department of Psychology at King’s IoP has an established international reputation for its research in clinical, health, forensic and neuro-psychology. Psychologists within the Department pioneered the development of cognitive behaviour therapy for the prevention and treatment of neurosis, psychosis, and physical illness. Members of the Department offer expert psychology services to the three NHS Trusts in the King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre – the South London and Maudsley, King’s College Hospital, and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital NHS Foundation Trusts.
Professor Richard Brown, Head of the Department of Psychology at King’s IoP, says: “We are delighted to welcome Professor Charman to the Department of Psychology and to the IoP. His work will continue a long traditional of world-class autism research in the Department. Professor Charman already has established collaborations with the IoP across a number of departments, promising a smooth transition into his new post. His arrival, with his team, will further strengthen the IoP’s international reputation for multidisciplinary translational and applied autism research.”
Professor Charman began his post in January 2013.
