About IABA Europe

About IABA

The International Association for Biography and Autobiography (IABA) is an interdisciplinary international group founded in 1999 to create a way for researchers and cultural producers in the field of biography, autobiography and life writing to share their work. Since 2000, members of IABA have run a conference every two years in locations which have included China, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. IABA does not have a formal membership process. It has a list serve which informs its members about upcoming conferences, publications and other events connected to the study of autobiography, life writing and biography. IABA is maintained by an informal group of senior scholars, most of whom have run a IABA conference. IABA also has a close relationship with academic journals which includes biography: an interdisciplinary quarterly, a/b: a journal of auto/biography studies and Life Writing.

IABA has an association with IABA Europe, a network of primarily European scholars which holds a biannual conference in alternate years. It also has an association IABA Americas, a recently formed group of researchers interested in auto/biography and life writing from South America, Central America, the Caribbean and North America.

About the Hosts

The Centre for Life-Writing Research is a pioneering group producing some of the most innovative work in the field. Established in 2007, and now part of the Arts & Humanities Research Institute, it enables experts and students to share research and exchange ideas with a wider audience.

We work on all sorts of topics and periods covering a wide range of genres –biography,  autobiography, autofiction, diaries and  letters, memoirs, digital life-writing including social media, blogs, audio and video, the visual arts especially portraiture, poetry, and medical narratives including case histories. What connects us is an interest in the theory, history and practice of life-writing

The European Journal of Life Writing is an interdisciplinary journal, published by the European section of the International Auto/Biography Association (IABA Europe). The EJLW aims to provide a forum for work in the field of all forms of life narratives, with contributions ranging from conceptual to practical and creative work. The European Journal of Life Writing consists of volumes, not issues. European Journal of Life Writing - ISSN 2211-243X - is an open access initiative supported by the VU University Library.

This conference is supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Institute, Centre for Life-Writing Research and Ego Media Project.
