This module is for Year 3 Department of Classics finalists with suitable language experience only.
The aim of this module is to strengthen student’s language and translation skills, by practising them in extracting sense from a previously unseen extract of Latin or Greek prose or verse, and expressing it in good English. Close attention will be paid to the vocabulary, grammar and style of the selected passages, helping students to acquire an increased appreciation of linguistic detail which will assist them also in their set-book work. A wide range of genres and authors will be sampled in the process, thus also extending students’ acquaintance with works and authors not otherwise featuring in their programme of study.
In the end of year examinations, passages in both Greek and Latin will be set. Students taking both Greek and Latin Texts at Level 6 will be required to attempt passages in both Greek and Latin; students taking Latin Texts at level 6 but no Greek, or Greek at Level 5, will attempt passages in Latin only.
