I received my PhD in Literary Studies from KU Leuven in 2013 with a dissertation on Plutarch’s Quaestiones Naturales.

As a postdoctoral fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO), I published on the broader genre of natural-medical problems after the model of the Aristotelian Natural Problems, with specific attention to aspects of scientific continuity, ingenuity, innovation and their conceptual interplay. As part of this project I took up research stays at the Humboldt University in Berlin and at the Hardt Foundation in Geneva.

My project at King’s, funded by the British Academy, centres on the circulation of the Aristotelian Problems in the Greco-Roman Empire. Its aim is to open up new horizons for scholarship on a methodological level by repositioning authors and readers in the history of ancient scientific literature. I also received a fellowship from the Center for Hellenic Studies (Harvard) for the 2016-17 academic year to work out part of this project.

Research interests and PhD supervision

My research interests are situated at the junction of ancient science and medicine and the literature and culture of the Greco-Roman Empire.  I would be most delighted to mentor anyone interested in conducting research in these fields.

  • Literature and thought of the Greco-Roman Empire (esp. Plutarch)
  • Ancient science and philosophy
  • Ancient medicine
