7AAICC04 Dissertation (Cultural and Creative Industries)

Teaching pattern: 1 one-hour lecture at the end of semester one and up to 6 hours of individual supervision
Module description:

This module represents the culmination of the MA Cultural & Creative Industries programme, allowing students to demonstrate what they have learned from the taught modules, by presenting a considered and sustained argument or investigation in the form of a dissertation or research project in an approved format relating to the cultural and creative industries. 

Module aims

This module aims to build on learning from the taught modules in the MA Cultural & Creative Industries, and in particular to:

  • provide students with the opportunity to undertake and successfully complete a dissertation or research project, which plans, manages and delivers a considered and sustained written argument or original investigation relevant to the programme field.
  • identify and make effective use of appropriate methodologies, theoretical frameworks, and source materials to solve problems and advance research in the context of the cultural and creative industries.
  • display an understanding of the relationship between enquiry, evidence and interpretation appropriate to their programme of study.
  • develop and widen students’ creativity, research and communication skills such that working independently they are able to demonstrate confidence in gathering, assimilating, analysing, interpreting and disseminating relevant information (potentially of many different types) through the process of preparing a dissertation or research project.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, the students will be able to demonstrate intellectual, transferable and practical skills appropriate to a Level 7 module and in particular will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the requisite knowledge, understanding and capabilities involved in devising, planning and delivering a compelling, insightful and original dissertation or research project relating to the cultural and creative industries.
  • Apply judgement in the choice of theoretical framework, methodology (including, where appropriate, that informed by arts-based research), and source materials employed, defending their suitability given the particular research topic being examined, and the distinctiveness of the cultural and creative industries context.
  • Critically evaluate their own research design, the extent to which their chosen methodological approach contributes to a convincing sustained argument or original investigation, and the degree to which it succeeds in communicating emerging ideas and knowledge. 
  • Critically reflect on their development as researchers over the course of the module, with particular regard to developing and managing an individual research project with confidence, creativity and academic rigour.
