6AAQS315 Film and New Media

Module description: This module considers many possible ways of understanding film’s evolving place within the new media landscape. Students will be encouraged to take little for granted. For instance, what does one refer to when one says “new media”? Weren’t films once “new” media, and how do they relate to what is referred to when one uses the term today? How might one understand the significance of a movie composed of recycled YouTube videos? When is it possible to distinguish between a digital image and an analogue image—and why does it matter? How do gender, sexuality, race, and consciousness shape and get reconfigured by digital technologies, and how does this change cinematic spectatorship, narratives, representations, and the possibilities of studying them? What do writers mean when they claim that there has been a “death of cinema,” and what is “post-cinema”? What is cinema’s future in an algorithmic culture, and how might it intervene politically in rendering visible the many obfuscations accompanying life in the information age? To explore these and other questions, this module will examine key concepts and debates from various disciplines (film history and theory, new media studies, cultural studies, English, art, information studies, women’s studies, critical theory, etc.) that help navigate the intersection of film and new media, alongside a range of cinematic works that visualize, thematise, and/or stage these questions. 

Assessment pattern: Participation (15%), 1 x 2500-word essay (25%), Exam (60%)

Reassessment method:  Period 3 exam replacement assessment is a 2000-word essay.

Teaching pattern: Ten three-hour screenings and ten two-hour seminars.

Core reading: Core course readings will be provided.
