Research in Film Studies

The Film Studies Department at King’s College London is a leading centre for research on all aspects of cinema, from its earliest days to the present.

Key areas of research

Asian cinema

The Department’s Asian cinema cluster supports research on the cinemas of China, Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan. It is a co-founder of the AHRC funded network, Chinese Film Festival Studies, and is the home of the Chinese Visual Festival Film Club.

European cinema

The Film Studies Department’s research on European cinema is distinguished nationally and internationally by its investigation of both popular and art cinema. Key research projects include studies of popular film genres and stars, and philosophically informed studies of influential filmmakers.

North American cinema

The department’s research cluster in North American cinema supports an equally diverse range of innovative research, covering studies of Hollywood cinema, experimental cinema, and artists’ film and media.

Research in these areas spans cultural-historical and theoretical and philosophical approaches, often bringing historical and theoretical ways of thinking about cinema into productive dialogue. Each of these research clusters supports investigation of all forms of film and new media: from silent cinema, to narrative features, documentary film, avant-garde and experimental film, and artists’ film in the gallery.

Shared areas of historical and theoretical inquiry include:

  • Changing patterns of film distribution and exhibition
  • The study of cities and regional centres in relation to film production and film culture
  • Institutional spaces and networks (film festivals, museums, and artist-run spaces)
  • Queer cinema

Our partners

Through the AHRC funded networks, Chinese Film Festival Studies, and Global Queer Cinema, the Department has collaborative research links to the University of Nottingham, the University of Sussex and the University of Warwick. King’s College London is part of the AHRC-funded London Arts and Humanities Partnership (LAHP) that includes the School of Advanced Study (SAS) and University College London (UCL).

The Film Studies Department at King’s has well-established research links with the BFI and staff members are regularly invited guests of national radio and television programmes, and universities, museums, galleries, and film festivals worldwide.
