Biography

Matteo Salonia joined the department in 2017 as Lecturer in Early Modern Iberian & Portuguese History, including the Colonial World. He studied at the Università di Parma (Italy), Fordham University (New York), and Roosevelt University (Chicago). In 2015, he was awarded a PhD in History from the University of Liverpool. Before coming to King’s College, he taught at the University of Liverpool and at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Matteo Salonia has published research on the late medieval and early modern history of the Republic of Genoa. He has brought together economic, political and intellectual history to investigate Genoa’s commercial expansion, institutional development and cosmopolitanism. He is especially interested in the origins of the sixteenth-century Hispanic-Genoese alliance.

Dr. Salonia is currently working on the idea of universal monarchy during the reign of Charles V.

Expertise and public engagement
