King's College London has 150 years of tradition in teaching and researching Liberal Arts subjects. Its graduates from the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, such as Nobel Prize Winners Desmond Tutu and Mario Vargas Llosa, have demonstrated how a deep understanding of these subjects can inspire a life striving for justice, global citizenship and leadership.

Key qualities of the BA Liberal Arts:

Flexibility and interdisciplinarity: Tailor your own degree from a wide range of subjects across the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Work across disciplines to develop insight into issues from various perspectives. Choose a major and minor to allow both depth and breadth. No requirements in math or science.

Value: Most liberal arts degrees around the world, and an increasing number in the UK, are four years. Our degree is three years, providing a highly focussed education built around a core curriculum.

Employability: An internship module, a wide range of language options, and a well-rounded education at a top-ranking university prepare you for your chosen career. Enjoy a core curriculum that foregrounds important skills including independent research, collaborative projects, and oral presentations.

International outlook: Study with people from all over the world, in a vibrant, multicultural city. As part of the degree you can spend a semester abroad at one of our global partner institutions. Many of our students enjoy studying in New York City as part of an exclusive Liberal Arts exchange with the New School.

Expertise: Experience thought-provoking lectures by world-leading academics, and engage in debate and discussion in seminars and tutorials.

Individual support: You are guided through your degree by a personal tutor from the Liberal Arts academic team, advising you on how to achieve everything you want from your time at university.

The story of Liberal Arts

The origins of Liberal Arts go back to ancient Greece and Rome. Scholars as diverse as Pythagoras, Plato and Socrates insisted on the virtues of an education that spanned the disciplines. In the Middle Ages, this idea continued as universities began by teaching the range of subjects known at the time. From the 19th century onwards, a growing trend towards specialisation in the development of individual disciplines led to the introduction of more subject-specific degrees at university.

As academic research has increasingly broken down disciplinary boundaries, it has become clear that researchers of the future will need to be able to use knowledge and skills from across multiple disciplines to address major research questions. At the same time, the pace of economic change means that transferrable skills such as communication, critical thinking and cultural awareness are increasingly seen as the vital keys to career success. The BA Liberal Arts therefore draws on a rich educational tradition to meet contemporary needs.
